2011 Season

It is never too early to get started. Although football season is over 2 months away getting in shape doesn't happen over night. Here are a couple things you can do that will get you ready for football season.
1) Run - practice and games are at 2:30 and 6 so you want to run during that time
2) Practice hydration - make sure you drink plenty of water BEFORE you do any exercise.
3) Eat healthy - cut back on sodas and greasy food
4) Rest - make sure you get plenty of rest.
5) Read - Do your summer reading so you don't fail and become disqualified to play football.

MS Football starts when school does, all the information here is based on how the program has been run for the previous 3 years. No - we don't have any coaches but we do have the schedule - subject to change. It gives you an idea what to expect.

We will try and have a intersquad scrimmage on Tuesday Nov 3rd right after school. (It has to be over by 6:30p because Varisity has practice)

Brazos Christian Middle School 34, Anderson 8: Cooper Owen scored on a 20-yard run and ran in a PAT and the BCS Eagles (7-0) rolled to a 34-8 win over Anderson.
Kenny Honnas had a 50-yard touchdown run, Brandon Bollin scored on a 26-yard run and Cooper Wright had a 9-yard touchdown run for BCS.
Justin Duewall grabbed an interception and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Wright.
Riley Garner led the BCS defense with 12 tackles, while Honnas had six. Bollin recorded a safety when he tackled the Anderson punter in the end zone.

Intersquad Scrimmage

Every year, Coach Sanders has and intersquad scrimmage. A fun mini game where the boys run their own plays and play different position. This seasons intersquad scrimmage is tomorrow, tuesday, October 12th.

The boys got divided up into teams today.

Brazos Christian Middle School 32, Snook 0: Kenny Honnas scored on runs of 24 and 16 yards and had a fumble recovery for BCS (6-0).
Brandon Bollin, Riley Garner and Cooper Owen had touchdown runs of 42, 47 and 14 yards, respectively, for the Eagles. Justin Duewall caught a pass from Cooper Wright for a PAT conversion.
John Gillett, Briley Landers, Bollin and Duewall each had fumble recoveries.
BCS hosts Anderson on Thursday.

Yes we live in Texas... We have two season... summer and not so hot as summer. It is actually NORMAL to be upper 80s and low 90s during this part of the year. BTW - It is snowing in Montana. The forcast calls for a "cold front" (we may dip down into the 70s) on Saturday!! I have arranged for it NOT to rain on Thursday. Took a little finagling but I think we hammered out the details this afternoon. Make sure the boys drink and drink more!

Brazos Christian Middle School 34, St. Mary's (West) 6: Sam Thomasson returned the opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown and the Brazos Christian Eagles (5-0) rolled to a 34-6 win over St. Mary's.
Brandon Bollin, Cooper Wright and Cooper Owen scored on runs of 34, 26 and 23 yards, respectively, for BCS. Wright and Owen both had PAT runs.
Riley Garner added two PAT runs and recorded a safety.
Defensively for the Eagles, Jake Mueller had an interception and Bollin, Owen and Garner each recorded five tackles. Mueller also covered a St. Mary's onside kick.
BCS hosts Snook on Thursday.

Brazos Christian Middle School 24, Gause 0: Kenny Honnas scored three touchdowns for Brazos Christian (4-0) in the win Thursday.
Honnas scored on a 44-yard scramble, a 48-yard double reverse and, after BC recorded a safety, Honnas returned the ensuing kick 55 yards for a score.
Brandon Bollin led the BC defense with seven tackles, a fumble recovery and an onside kick recovery. Briley Landers and Cooper Owen recorded six tackles each.
Owen and Riley Garner both had PAT runs.
John Gillett also led on defense for BC, adding a 35-yard fumble recovery and return. Justin Duewall had three pass breakups and Jeyton McNair added two.
The Gause offense was led by Jordan Millar and Dakota Grandchamp. Millar also had an interception.
Isaiah Scott led the Gause defense.

Brazos Christian Middle School 14, St. Joseph MS 0: Riley Garner punched in from the 4-yard line in the first quarter and Brazos Christian (3-0) went on to beat St. Joseph (0-2).
Kenny Honnas set up Garner's touchdown with a 27-yard run on third down. Honnas finished with 77 yards on seven carries. Garner had 20 carries for 86 yards and ran in a PAT.
On defense for BC, Brandon Bollin had eight tackles, including three for a loss, and Garner and Cooper Owen both had five. Owen also recovered two St. Joseph fumbles. Sam Thomasson had several big hits on defense and special teams and had a touchdown-saving pass breakup in the fourth quarter.
Up 6-0 and facing fourth down with 1:33 left in the game, Brazos Christian's Justin Duewall caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Wright to give the Eagles an insurance score.
For St. Joseph, Kyle Castilleja had a 34-yard run at the start of the second half. Kyle Locke and Matt Krause stood out on defense.
BC hosts Gause and St. Joseph hosts Anderson-Shiro on Thursday.

The Cross Town - Show Down - MS style!!!! As everyone should know, game has officially been moved to BCS. There are also two volleyball games going on - JV at 5 and Varsity at 6.

They will have the concession stands open at 5:30, which included hotdogs and hamburgers.

There is chance of rain today but hopefully it will just keep the temperatures down so you may want to pack an umbrella.

Brazos Christian Middle School 30, Texas School for the Deaf MS 0: AUSTIN - Brazos Christian's Briley Landers blocked a punt and ran it in for a touchdown in the Eagles' win. Landers also had a sack.
Riley Garner (38 yards) and Sam Thomasson (7 yards) both had touchdown runs for Brazos Christian (2-0). Justin Duewall caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Wright. Cooper Owen ran in two PATs. Wright also ran in a PAT and caused a fumble. Duewall and Jeyton McNair both covered muffed punts by TSD and Brandon Bollin blocked a punt.
The Brazos Christian defense held TSD to minus 40 yards. Kenny Honnas and Garner both had six tackles and John Gillett caused a fumble.

TSD's Field is Gamblin - It is on their campus at 1102 S CONGRESS AVE, Austin, TX 78704-1728.

I am still waiting for the Official word on the timing of the boys departure.
Coach Sanders said they were taking the bus (Coach Sanders can drive it). I expect they will leave the campus between 2:30 and 3:00 but as soon as I get the official word I will post it and I am sure they will send out an email to let you know.

We did not get to play TSD last year because of Hurricane IKE and this is their first game of the year for them so I don't have a scouting report to give you. This is also one of only two home games for them.

Brazos Christian Middle School 28, Waco Reicher 0: The Brazos Christian Middle School Eagles opened their season with a 28-0 win over the Waco Reicher Cougars on Thursday.

Cooper Owen led the Eagles with 7 carries for 103 yards, including touchdown runs of 67 and 9 yards. Owen also ran in a PAT. Riley Garner finished with 101 yards on 12 carries and one PAT.

Brandon Bollin led the Eagle defense with eight tackles, including three sacks and three tackles for loss. Kenny Honnas added six tackles and Garner had five tackles, four for a loss.

Justin Duewall intercepted a Reicher pass and returned it 26 yards for a score. Quarterback Cooper Wright scored the final Eagle touchdown on a 3-yard run in the third quarter.

The Eagles will play at Texas School for the Deaf on Thursday.

Parents of Jr High players,
Welcome to the season! Yesterday your boys and I had great meeting and I think we are all excited about the up coming season.

First of all I would like to let you know what my goal is for this season or any sport season: to develop young men as disciples of Christ and Christian leaders amongst their own peer group. To me the season is a waste if these boys do not grow in Christ as young leader for Him. In accordance with this goal I am going to have 8 memory verses for the boys to memorize this season, one verse per game. Whoever can say all 8 of the verse when we turn pads in at the end of the season, those boys will get a reward (pizza party during lunch or something). My second goal is to teach the fundamentals of football. There is no championship for Jr High, so in my mind winning games is secondary to these young men understanding football and learning the ins and outs of the game. I will do everything that I can to make sure this is done safely while having fun as well.
The meeting with the boys yesterday was simply about rules (respect, no foul language tolerated, locker room rules, trouble in school means trouble in football, etc), and information they need to know about equipment. We also talked about a new weekly award I am going to be giving out called the Work Horse award. This award will go to one offensive and one defensive player every game week, they will receive a small blue football and more importantly they will lead our team out onto the field on game day. This award is given to the player who works the hardest during the week. It has nothing to do with talent or popularity. It can be given to a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader. The purpose of this award is to highlight hard work, not talent, as the team's most valuable asset, and to show the young men that they are valuable and noticed by coaches regardless of whether they score 5 touchdowns or make 15 tackles a game.
Some requests I have of you as parents are as follows:

1) While watching games please refrain from verbal abuse of refs. We are a jr high TAPPS team, we are going to get the worst of the worst in officials and we are also the entry point for new officials. If we both (myself included) know that going into games it will make it easier to refrain. Remember this level of football is about development, not winning at all costs.

2) Please try to keep communication with your son to an absolute bare minimum during games. Its hard to put a player in the game if he is over by the stands talking and I can not find him.

3) Please stay off the sidelines at all times during games. If you have something you would like to do i.e. take pictures or video please ask me before EVERY game to come on the sidelines and the coaches and I will make a call on it. The only adults on the sidelines at all time should be the coaches and water distributor.

Some commitment I want to make to you:

1) To treat you and your son with the utmost respect at all times.
2) To influence your son for Christ, and aid you in showing him that living for/ influencing other for Christ is all that truly matters.
3) To try my VERY best to get every player into every game at least for a play or two.
4) To keep the lines of communication open between coaches and parents.
5) To have fun playing a game with your kids!

My last closing note is that physicals are absolutely necessary for your player to get to practice. Cheri Head in the office is the person in charge of managing those.

I know it is only July but it is time to think FOOTBALL. BCS has posted the Middle School schedule. We only have 2 away games and only one is out of town. We have an extra game this year against Anderson which gives us 8 games. 4 in september and 4 in October.

Another good item is that I got a new lense JUST FOR football to capture the fastmoving action better. So dust off your cleats, synch up your pads and lets get ready for some GRIDIRON<>

Friday EAGLE write up.

Brazos Christian Middle School 30, Waco Texas Christian 6: WACO -- Brazos Christian's Will McCurdy had three touchdowns and rushed 12 times for 149 yards. McCurdy also completed a 30-yard pass to Blaine Landers to set up his own touchdown run and had two fumble recoveries.

Cooper Owen had an 8-yard rushing touchdown, a sack and an interception for Brazos Christian (3-3). Michel Kahil had 10 tackles, three for a loss, and combined with Ryan Baron for a safety.

Riley Garner had a fumble recovery while Gentry Gayle ran in a 2-point conversion. Gayle also converted a fourth down by finding Justin Duewall with a 15-yard pass.

Brazos Christian Middle School 30, Snook Middle School 6: Ben Schams had 102 yards rushing, including a 61-yard touchdown, for the Brazos Christian School Eagles (2-3) in a 30-6 win over the Snook Bluejays. Schams also grabbed an interception and returned it 52 yards for a score.
In the third quarter, the Eagles' Cooper Owen had a 41-yard touchdown run. On defense, Owen recorded six tackles, two for a loss, and had a fumble recovery. Michel Kahil led the BCS defense with eight tackles, while Will McCurdy and Ryan Baron both had six. John Gillett had a fumble recovery.
Eric Lucas closed out the scoring for the Eagles on a 20-yard touchdown run. McCurdy ran in two PATs and Gentry Gayle ran in one.
In the second quarter, Vincent Miller punched in from the 4-yard line for the Bluejays. Gregory Rivera led the Snook rushers with 58 yards.

Tuesday's Eagle Write Up - The RIGHT one

Eagles can’t overcome quick strikes by Mustangs

WEST – Down 28-22 with just over a minute to play, Riley Garner gave the Eagles a last-chance effort when he recovered a Mustang fumble at the St. Mary’s 16-yard line. On third down, however, St. Mary’s intercepted a pass and ran it back for another score to win 34-22 in West on Tuesday, Sept. 30. According to the St. Mary’s coach, his team had not been scored on this season.
With the Eagles down by 12 in the second quarter, Blaine Landers grabbed an interception. Two plays later, Ben Schams scored on a 41-yard run and Will McCurdy ran in the PAT to get BCS within 4 points. Unfortunately, St. Mary’s answered with a quick strike of its own.
On the ensuing drive, McCurdy had a three-yard gain on 4th-and-1 to give the Eagles another set of downs. As time expired in the first half, Gentry Gayle threw a perfect pass to Landers, who ran it in for a score as the horn blew. The PAT run was no good, but the Eagles were within striking distance, 20-14, at the half.
The Eagles got the ball first in the second half. After a holding call, they had 2nd-and-20 when Gayle threw another pass to Landers. Landers and the defender both bobbled it several times, but Landers came down with the ball for a 19 yard gain. After a loss on the next play, BCS went for it on fourth down, but came up short. St. Mary’s again scored on the first play for a 28-14 lead after the PAT.
The Eagles showed they could strike quick, too, when Gayle threw a well-timed pass to Justin Duewall on first down. Duewall never had to break stride, caught the ball and ran down the field for a 67-yard touchdown. McCurdy again ran in the PAT and the Eagles were back within six points.
St. Mary’s turned the ball over on downs at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Starting on their own 44-yard line, the Eagles used 13 plays to drive the ball all the way to the St. Mary’s 15, but could not convert on 4th-and-4. Four plays earlier, Schams threw a 12-yard halfback-pass to Landers on 4th-and-11 to keep the drive alive. Garner would give the Eagles one last shot with his fumble recovery, but St. Mary’s closed things out with the interception.
Schams finished with 90 yards on 17 carries. McCurdy carried the ball 18 times for 65 yards and had a 59-yard kickoff return in the first half. Landers had three catches for 58 yards and Duewall had two catches for 84 yards.
Ryan Baron led the Eagle defense with five tackles. Eric Lucas and Michel Kahil both had three tackles. Lucas, along with Cole Elms and Landers, had one onside/kickoff recovery each.
BCS (1-3) will try to bounce back on October 23rd when they host Snook. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

Gause Junior High 24, Brazos Christian Middle School 22: Brazos Christian's Will McCurdy rushed for 131 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown, in the loss.

Brazos Christian's Ben Schams had 41 yards rushing and 66 kick return yards. Schams scored on a 10-yard rush and had an interception. Justin Duewall covered a loose ball in the end zone for the last Brazos Christian touchdown. Duewall also caught three Gentry Gayle passes for 37 yards. Gayle ran in two PATs for BCS.

Cooper Owen led the Eagle defense with 10 tackles. Riley Garner added six and Michel Kahil and Ryan Baron each had five.

Cory Coulter and Austin Turner led Gause on both sides of the ball. With Brazos Christian driving at the end of the first half, Jordan Millar came up with an interception to keep Gause ahead 8-0. Dakota Grandchamp also had a fumble recovery in the first half.

Brazos Christian (1-2) plays at St. Mary's in West on Tuesday.

Victory 26-0

Brazos Christian Middle School 26, St. Joseph 0: Will McCurdy rushed for 92 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Brazos Christian's middle school team to a 26-0 victory over St. Joseph.

Ben Schams started the scoring with a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown. Schams also broke up two St. Joseph pass attempts and ran in a PAT. Cooper Owen led the Brazos Christian defense with 10 tackles. Owen also had an interception, a fumble recovery and rushed for 30 yards.

The St. Joseph defense was led by Lucas Lipscomb, Jon Horseman and Bobby Kucera. Lipscomb had an interception for St. Joseph.

Brazos Christian (1-1) hosts Gause on Thursday.

Due to the hurricane, (weather & traffic complications) Brazos Christian School is following suit with all the area schools and for this week will move the Friday night football game to this Thursday. The junior high game will be moved up from 5:30pm to 4:00pm and the Varsity game will be at 6:00pm tomorrow.

Our game schedules for tomorrow (Thursday) is:
4:00 Junior High Football vs Texas School for the Deaf
5:00 JV Volleyball vs SATCH
6:00 Varsity Football vs TSD
6:00 Varsity Volleyball vs SATCH

Also, please note that the JV Football game scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled due to the pending weather. (JV football vs Regents)

Waco Reicher 8th grade 20, Brazos Christian Middle School 0: WACO -- Brazos Christian Middle School was shut out by Waco Reicher 20-0 on Thursday.

Brazos Christian's Will McCurdy led the defense with eight tackles, adding one pass deflection and averaging 30 yards per punt. Cooper Owen had six tackles for the Eagles, while Michel Cahil had three tackles, two for a loss, and a fumble recovery.

Justin Duewall caught a 25-yard pass from quarterback Gentry Gayle and had two tackles on defense.

Brazos Christian hosts Snook on Thursday.

I looked at the map... and I still don't know where I am going. Their school website gives you one set of directions, google gives you another and when I try and make as direct a line as I can from 6 to their fields, I sitll have something like 8 turns.
